Will Getting A Masters Degree Make a Difference?

Should I Pursue A Masters Degree or Not?

How should I get started making the important decision to go back to school–especially after the age of 40 or 50 years old. Believe me when I tell you it is a daunting task, hard work, lots of concentration, commitment and focus. Begin to access what you accomplished with your undergraduate degree. Think about how it helped your career and moved it forward. Decide if getting a degree in the same field is the right thing to do or trying for a different subject is the better way to go?

What Type of Degree Should I Pursue

Some masters degrees are more generalized and some tweaked for specific topics, for example; an MFA’ Master’s in Fine Arts or gaining a more liberal arts masters degree in Organizational Leadership with a specialization in Human Resources or some other specialization.Usually this degree is more liberal in nature, and has a specialization towards the end of the coursework. In other words, it will not allow you to teach at college level.

Nonetheless, you can teach at the college level, start your own business, strive for a promotion at work, seek a career in the subject matter for which you gained your masters degree and start your career development. Decide what’s important and why you want to further your education in the first place. Some people just want to be able to say, they have a master’s degree on hand, others need it to get promoted at work or advance their paychecks.

I recommend that you do your research on the net and talk to someone you know that has reached the pinnacle of obtaining their masters. Walking across the stage to accept your masters degree is the most fulfilling accomplishment you can obtain. Remember, it comes with focus and hard work. The pay off is exciting and rewarding. Get started toward taking your education to the next step in your life.

Does It Pay Off

While having a masters degree is nice. However, when checking the advertisements for jobs offering positions with a preferred masters degree is rare. Jobs don’t want to pay the salaries of a master degreed person when they can pay someone with a bachelor’s degree to do the same work. Furthermore, no one wants a degree just to get a better pay check–generally. There needs to be some sort of satisfaction in having it and doing the work that pertains to it–even if it’s starting your own consulting service or professional services business. With the economy the way that it is–starting a business may not be such a bad idea after all. Most programs can be obtained in less than two years online. Anyway, look into it, decide what you want to do and why, get accepted into grad school and get good grades in the meantime.
